WELCOME TO MATH MOMENTS!

http://sitemaker.umich.edu/356.dobrowski/files/math.bmp

Hello Boys and Girls! We have created this page so that you can look back and remember everything we have done in math.

New Math Skills

Some parents have requested that we post upcoming math skills on the wiki, so here's the latest...

February Math Skills

This month we are working on multiplication and division and how they are related. Understanding the principal behind the concept is crucial. It isn't just about memorizing, but about understanding. Learning the facts is important and makes the job a lot easier. We encourage your child to practice the facts and allow many opportunities through practice in school, Portaportal at school and home, and whatever else that's available to you. We have included some Multiplication Raps, so click on the link and get into the multiplication groove!

We are also working on different types of measurement. Presently we are learning pounds and ounces along with some traditional and nontraditional forms of measuring objects. The children enjoy this activity and Mrs. Harper has created some very engaging activities.

January Skills

The students are starting to learn regrouping in subtraction. Here's where it becomes so important that they have committed their math facts to memory. We have also been studying Telling Time. We will begin studying fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) in the next few days. You can help your child by allowing him/her to visit our portaportal pages, which have links to the interactive websites that we use in lessons. You can find links to our portaportal pages in the sidebar on each page. Listen to our subtraction rap to help us remember how to regroup in subtraction.

Please help us with our data project. We want to learn where our visitors are from and which pages they visit. Click here to take a quick 1-2 minute survey. We promise it won't be any longer than that!

December Skills

The students are starting to learn regrouping in addition. If they are proficient in this area they will be honing their skills! One thing that is very helpful for the children is to know the basic math facts. It certainly helps them in computation skills and gives them added confidence. Mrs. Allen's Portaportal will have a folder where the children can gain practice as needed. After we all acquire basic skills in addition the class will move on to subraction with regrouping. When learning both of these skills a basic understanding of the underlying concept is addressed. Understanding place value is essential in doing both of these math calculations.

November skills

We studied data and graphing. We looked at the parts of a bar graph. Ask your child to tell you which are the following parts: Title, label, scale. S/he may even be able to identify the x and y axis! We read and interpreted data on several bar graphs. If you'd like to practice at home, look in the newspaper and you will frequently find bar graphs that you can interpret together. Next up after Thanksgiving: pictographs.

We have also been learning about rounding. Check out the rounding rap that Mrs. Allen and her son Luke created! Use the lyrics to help you practice your rounding skills!

Rounding Rap

Find that place value, circle that digit

Number to the right, underline, get it

Four and under, circle stays the same

Five and up, add one is the game

So flex your muscles like a hero

Digits to the right turn to zero

All other digits stay the same

Wow! You're a winner in the rounding game!
